Business goes from strength to strength
It’s just over a year since South Wales manufacturing company Hobbs Valve won a major business award – a year in which production has doubled, orders have soared, profits have hit record levels and staff numbers have increased more than 50 per cent.
While many in the manufacturing sector have experienced a challenging year of cutbacks and falling orders, Caerphilly-based Hobbs Valve have never had it so good.
Since winning the Caerphilly Business Forum’s Young Business of the Year High Growth Award last November, the business, which makes pioneering triple offset valves for use in the global oil and gas industry, has doubled production, seen turnover rise to record turnover, witnessed a 100% increase in trade, and manufactured two new cutting edge valves.
And the company is now calling on other businesses to do what they did – and help celebrate their success by entering the 2010 Caerphilly Business Forum Awards.
Established in 2005 by a group of shareholders headed by Managing Director Alun Hobbs, the six founding partners spent the first year carefully developing a new valve which has been the key to their meteoric success-adapting the standard elliptical valve to a revolutionary circular design combined with other patented enhancements.
In its first three years of trading the business quickly developed a substantial presence for itself, doubling its revenue year on year. Now employing a team of 25 at its factory on the Trecenydd Business Park, the company is due to employ a further four members of staff in coming months due to doubling its existing capacity with the assistance of the Welsh Assembly Government backed Single Investment Fund.
This will substantially allow the company to increase output in line with the demand that they are experiencing for their valves.
Having already fulfilled orders for over 3000 specialist valves, the company is continuing to expand its range of products with the launch of a new higher pressure valve and a cryogenic valve for use in extreme temperatures and environments, developments which Managing Director Alun Hobbs suggests are essential additions to the foundation of their success.
“Hobbs Valve began on a blank piece of paper in October 2005 when several of us who have worked in the industry for many years realised that things could be done better than they were elsewhere and that quality could be delivered alongside ingenuity.
“Winning the Caerphilly Business Forum Award in 2008 was a huge boost to us as, since then we have continued to grow and we are now at a real turning point in the business. Our reputation is opening many doors allowing us to branch into new and varied industry sectors, and demand for our services is at an all time high.
“This year has been tough for many businesses and I would strongly recommend that businesses celebrate what they have achieved this year, even if they haven’t done so in the past. Winning the Caerphilly Business Forum Award boosted morale and has reinforced our belief in our product and our excellent team.”
Martyn Fear, Chair of the Caerphilly Business Forum, said: “Hobbs Valve is an excellent example of the outstanding calibre of businesses trading in the Caerphilly county borough.
“Their success since winning is testament to their commitment to delivering excellence while exploring diversification and new products in what has been a difficult year for many.
“I would encourage businesses from across the county borough to stand up and be recognised for their hard work and ingenuity while faced with the challenges that this year has brought.”
